Project Description

DOLF VERMEULEN

I am a self-taught content creator based on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. I have been lucky to call this place home ever since my family moved to Canada just a year after I was born in England.

After completing high school in Gibsons I quickly transitioned to attending UBC Okanagan’s business management program, specializing my degree in marketing and project management. It was during this time that I discovered photography and not until my third year that I purchased my first DSLR. I quickly found that the majority of my free time was spent taking photos and watching youtube tutorials. After graduating with honours in 2015 I worked for the provincial government battling BC’s largest forest fires in order to fund a full frame DSLR and a winter of travelling.

My time abroad has been very influential in shaping the person I am today. I’ve been lucky enough to visit and experience over 20 countries throughout my relatively short time on this earth, all of which have left me with valuable insights and priceless memories. I cherish the travel photos I have taken as they allow me to look back and infinitely enjoy a single great moment. At some point all trips must come to an end, but lucky for me, one of my favourite aspects of travelling is returning to an amazing home and being able to see it through an entirely different filter. I still remember coming back from my first solo trip, in SE Asia, and having an overwhelming appreciation for toilets and accessible drinking water. I feel as though every time I return to British Columbia I find myself being thankful for something I used to take for granted. I think I live in the best place on earth.

During the summer of 2016 I had my first opportunity to turn my passion into an income source. I worked as a photographer in one of the most scenic areas of Canada, let alone the entire world. I was a photographer at Peregrine Lodge Fishing Adventures, in Northern Haida Gwaii. As the season came to an end I returned to my old stomping grounds on the Sunshine Coast and decided to have a go at running my own business – the rest is history. March 2017 was my first official job as Dolf Vermeulen Photography. After a few months, lots of investment, and a steep learning curve ‘Photography’ turned into ‘Creative’ as I started to welcome videography jobs as well. Early on in 2018 I was offered representation by the Kurbatoff Gallery in Vancouver for fine art photography. I quickly jumped on the opportunity and in September, that year, I had my first solo show.  I’ve continued to build my portfolio in both photo and video, and don’t see myself stopping any time soon. Thankful for my family, friends, and the community here on the Sunshine Coast for their support throughout this entire process. Also very appreciative of all my clients who have trusted me to tell their stories. Looking forward to what the future has in store!
